Improving local well-being through tourism: A study of the economic impact of tourism in Malang City, Indonesia

Abstract

This study examines the economic impact of tourism on the local income in Malang City through a literature review. Malang, with its natural beauty and rich cultural traditions, is a vital tourist destination for the local economy. The audit results indicate that tourism boosts regional income, creates job opportunities, and improves infrastructure, thus enhancing the quality of life for the community. Tourism promotes economic growth by increasing job opportunities, income, and living standards. Good infrastructure facilitates tourist access and supports long-term economic growth. Tourism also diversifies the economy by developing related industries such as creative industries and services. However, challenges such as high dependence on tourism, income inequality, and socio-cultural issues must be addressed. Sustainable tourism management strategies are required, including regulations, infrastructure investment, and the development of quality human resources supported by the government, community, and private sector. This study concludes that sustainable tourism management in Malang City can strengthen the regional economy in the future. Policy recommendations include adequate regulations, infrastructure investment, and human resource development to maximize the positive benefits of tourism and minimize its negative impacts. This approach guides decision-makers to support sustainable local economic growth through tourism.
